The FAKE flu VS. The REAL flu

With cold and flu season still upon us, I thought this was an important topic to cover.

"Just want to clear something up. The "Stomach Flu" that everyone across the nation is getting is called the Norovirus. It causes severe nausea, vomiting, and watery diarrhea that lasts for 2-5 days. It is highly contagious. If you got the flu vaccine this year, you were immunized against several influenza virus strains, not the Norovirus strain. So, don't assume that because you got the flu vaccine this year, that it isn't working, doesn't work, and will never work in the future. The flu vaccine is protecting our nation against another H1N1-like outbreak that killed hundreds of people and children."

-Robyn Velander

My former Coworker, a dietitian in the hospital I worked in up until our move to Ohio, posted this to her facebook page a few weeks ago. I meant to share it, but never got to it. This weighs heavy on my mind again as I read more ignorant facebook comments regarding the illnesses going around this season.

A day or two ago, someone posted they'd come down with the "stomach flu."

This was followed by a million tips on how to survive the "stomach flu."

Several comments told her to rush in to the doctor before it was too late, there was a medication she could get, but not if it was too late, called Tamiflu.

This comment made me want to smack my head on the desk.

Let's be clear...

IF YOU ARE THROWING UP, THIS IS
QUITE POSSIBLY THE NOROVIRUS.
THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT
IT. THE ILLNESS MUST RUN ITS
COURSE.

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF
DEHYDRATION, SUCH AS DECREASED
URINE OUTPUT, OR NO TEARS WHEN
CRYING. (THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN
INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN.)

THE "FLU" REFERS TO INFLUENZA, A
SEVERE RESPIRATORY INFECTION
CAUSED BY THE INFLUENZA VIRUSES.
THIS ILLNESS WILL LIKELY SEEM LIKE
A SEVERE COLD. SOMETIMES IT MAY BE
HARD TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THIS
AND THE COMMON COLD. BUT MOST WILL
RECOVER JUST THE SAME. IF YOUR
SYMPTOMS COME ON STRONG AND
QUICKLY, YOU MAY HAVE "INFLUENZA"
AND SHOULD CONSIDER SEEING YOUR
DOCTOR, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS SUCH AS CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE OR ASTHMA, AS THIS MAY EXACERBATE THOSE CONDITIONS. (AGAIN, THIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT FOR INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN.)

THE TAMIFLU MEDICATION MAY BE
PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR IF
INFLUENZA IS DIAGNOSED EARLY, BUT
IS NOT RIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

I am not a doctor, so you don't have to listen to me. In fact, never take the advice of some random blogger, or other internet advice over your doctor. With that said, I will give you the link to the CDC site where you can get more information if you'd like.
www.cdc.gov
OK, and for two last pieces of advice...
If you are sick with what you think is either of these, or just the common cold, STAY HOME!! These are contagious, and there is nothing so important that you should make the decision to spread an illness to an unsuspecting friend, neighbor, client, patient, etc...Fine, if you find you must go out, for meds, to the doctor, to deposit your paycheck so you don't overdraw, then go. BUT FOR HEAVENS SAKE, PUT ON A MASK.

Last but probably MOST IMPORTANT!!! Your best defense for illness is good hand washing!! Do a good job at this simple task, and you could avoid spreading a germ you have or don't even KNOW you have yet, let alone contracting a possible life threatening illness yourself.

This has been a rant and rave by Allie. Feel free to add, criticize, thumbs up, thumbs down, or share. ESPECIALLY share.

Baby It's Cold Outside!

I get it, it's winter in Ohio. It's supposed to be cold. Actually, it's supposed to be colder (and snowier) than it is. But I won't pass up a great chance to complain about it anyway!

Even Hadley is ready for warmer days.

Joseph and I packed her up for a little play time outside the other day. We figured she could get a little Vitamin D, burn some energy in preparation for a nap, and I could break out the camera that's sits around too much during the winter months while we all hibernate a little.

Bad idea.

Hadley was too cold to get out of Daddy's arms.

She cried.

I grabbed a few shots before we called it quits.

Then.

Hot chocolate.

Mmmmm.

I didn't get a shot of the best part of our adventure, the hot chocolate, but I will share a couple of those chilly shots by the pond.

Cars, Cars and More Cars.

This past month we drove into Detroit for the 2013 NAIAS Auto Show.
I have been wanting to share photos for a while, but I am the mother of a terrible two's child, and Joseph really is the more technical guy when it comes to photo editing. But, he fixed my Lightroom problems tonight and I was able to find a few to pick apart.

Here are a few of my favorites.

This is my Bentley.
I totally wanted to take this
home with me.

If my Dad drove THIS Corolla,
He'd probably be a lot cooler:)

Joseph brought along the matching
Hot Wheels Camaro
to put side by side this beauty.

I am usually not that into cars,
or Hot Wheels.
But this is a hot. car.

Look, Mom, it's an Outback! I
don't think we will ever buy
another, but I do love mine.
And my mom's.

Acura Concept Car. Fast.

Jaguar. Mmmm.
This was so pretty. I would also
take home this Veloster. A lot
more realistic than the
convertable at the top!

Working Backwards...

Ok, so, I am working backwards here, cause I couldn't stand to miss out.

This is my week #2 photo.
The theme was hearts.
For obvious reasons:)

These were delish, by the way.
But if you already follow me, you know that from our Valentine's post.

You can learn more about the "Click Chicks Photo Challenge" from this chick.

I won't be linking up on this one, since I am catching up, and the link up is closed, but I wanted to share anyway.

XOXO, Al

Things are Linking Up!!

No. Joke.
I do not get this "link up" thing y'all are doing. But I am going to do it today. Because, I just am tired of missing out.

I know someone will comment and fill me in. Give me tips. Tell me how badly I did. haha.

So a blog I follow has been posting for her photo challenge link up.
(At least, I think it is http://megs7827.blogspot.com/)

But when you click on this image, it won't do anything. It's just an image. It will not take you to her page. I don't know how to make this photo a link.  What am linking up to, anyway? And how will everyone else know?

Just the same, I am doing it. I am diving in. And accepting all tips.

This is week 3.
The challenge is nature.

Admittedly, this shot is taken
by my amazing husband, Joseph,
at our wedding site, I just did
a little editing.

Another shot at our wedding
site, Bella Collina, in
Amity, Oregon. Thanks to my
bestie's family, The Gibsons,
for giving us five of these
speechless sunsets.

This one is just for fun,
because it is in the same folder
as the other two. My bestie,
Stephanie, after a long night
of bachelorette festivities.

Alright, so there you have it. My First attempt at "linking up".
Please don't think I'm an idiot. I just am new to all things blog.

Next week, week 4's, assignment is water. My goal is to actually go find water and not use the most beautiful water I have already seen.

Here goes nothing...

Be with the ones you love, and love the ones you are with!

Happy Valentine's day from our home to yours. Hadley and I are both sick:( And Joseph, of course, worked. So, tomorrow we will dedicate to L.O.V.E from morning 'til night.

Regardless, Hadley and I couldn't help but attempt to heart it up around here today. And for every failure, I am proud to say there is a success.

Here's the fail...
Yes, those Jigglers sure are tricky. You see, you have to follow the special JIGGLER recipe, not the regular jello recipe. I did not know this. Boo.

Here's the success!!

These are Fudgy Brownie Hearts with Fresh Buttercream. These are my take, but the credit goes to a blogger I follow, afarmgirlsdabbles.com. She posted the recipe for these last Valentine's season, and I have been saving all year long:)

"Happy Valentime's Day!!!!"
Love, Baby Hadley

"Mmmmm, yumm, I like this." -H

Sweetheart Shortbread With Super shiny Icing

I had planned to blog about our quick trip to Philly/NJ today, but I think I will hold off and see if I can get something special to add to it before I publish.

So instead I am going to share an amazing Valentine treat. After all, it IS February now:)Here's my take on a classic.

Side note: Our friend Julia just set out on her exciting new journey in Florida, so Hadley and I dropped these by the office on her last day to show her how much we will miss her.

Sweetheart Shortbread With Super shiny Icing

Sweetheart Shortbread
*Originally found on diamondsfordessert.com

3 Cups flour

1/2 Cup cornstarch
1/4 Teaspoon salt
1/2 Teaspoon baking powder
1/2 Teaspoon baking soda
1 stick (8 Tablespoon) butter, at room temperature
1 Cup sugar
1 large egg
2/3 Cup fat free milk
food coloring

Cream the butter and sugar together. Mix in the egg. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Pour half of the dry mix into your butter/sugar/egg mixture and combine. Mix in the milk and then add in the remaining half of the dry ingredients.

If you'd like to go for the fabulous colored hearts, get out your food coloring selections, and divide the dough into as many equal pieces as colors you have chosen. Take one piece of dough, add two or three drops of food coloring, and knead the dye into the dough. Repeat with the other dough pieces with different food colorings. Wrap each piece of dough in plastic wrap and chill them for 1 hour, or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Take the dough out of the fridge. Sandwich one piece of dough between two pieces of plastic wrap on a flat surface, or place on a flat, floured surface. (But I swear, the plastic wrap method is AMAZING!). Roll the dough out to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Whether you are going for thin and crispy, or thicker and chewier, they will turn out perfect. Cut with a cookie cutter! Obviously you can do any shape you'd like, but in the spirit of love, let's go heart! Place cut-outs on parchment lined cookie sheets. Repeat with the other doughs.

Bake each sheet for 10 minutes. Then check. This is really where your creativity and taste comes in. You may choose to leave in for an additional five to get a little firmer cookie. After 15 minutes of baking, you may still want to give another 5-10 minutes for the crunchiest shortbread. BUT! then you will need to cover each sheet with a piece of aluminum foil (to preserve the colors). Let cool on tray. If the cookies still aren't crunchy after cooled, place back in the oven, still covered by the foil, and bake for 5-10 more minutes and then let cool again.

[If you want flatter cookies (less baking time is needed for flatter cookies), either poke each cookie with a fork so that the cookies are covered with holes, or roll the dough thinner, 1/16 inch thick. Then, bake each sheet for 15 minutes and let cool. If still not crunchy, replace in the oven for  5-10 more minutes, covered in foil.]

Makes approximately 50 large cookies or 75 small cookies.

Now for that Super shiny Icing!
(Hadley's favorite part. I know this because she licked the icing off many, many of these cookies and put them back on the tray when she was done).

Super Shiny Icing

2 Cups powdered sugar
2 Teaspoons butter, melted
1 Teaspoon vanilla
1 Tablespoon corn syrup
1 Teaspoon heavy cream
Whatever coloring you desire

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until well mixed. If you are looking for a thicker consistency, you may add powdered sugar by the tablespoon. If you are looking for thinner, (which is what I was going for,) add corn syrup by the teaspoon (I added several teaspoons corn syrup to be able to pipe the icing as shown).
